Dailymotion is a global video hosting and streaming platform. Operating since 2005, Dailymotion serves as a primary alternative to platforms like YouTube, hosting a mix of professional, independent, and user-generated video content in over 180 languages.

The mobile application relies on an adaptive bitrate streaming engine to deliver video. This player dynamically monitors network bandwidth and adjusts video playback resolution (up to 1080p HD) to prevent buffering.

A core design element of the app is its recommendation algorithm. Unlike standard social video platforms that optimize feeds strictly to maximize watch time, Dailymotion uses an exploration-focused algorithm. This system is designed to introduce users to a wider variety of channels and viewpoints, helping to reduce echo chambers.

From a publisher's perspective, Dailymotion Studio offers advanced access controls. Creators can set domain-level or app-bundle restrictions to control exactly where their videos can be played, using the Android package name to identify and protect official content.

However, the application faces some notable user experience issues. The ad delivery system is heavily integrated, resulting in frequent, unskippable ad breaks during playback. These ads are delivered via standard VAST (Video Ad Serving Template) or VPAID models, often interrupting content every few minutes.

The user interface also has several layout flaws. The video player places user comments directly over video subtitles with no option to hide or dismiss them, blocking translated dialogue. Additionally, the app’s search engine relies heavily on exact keyword matching in video titles, making it difficult to discover content based on broader topics. The player also lacks basic speed-control options.
