Overview
Ingress (currently distributed as Ingress Prime) by Niantic Spatial Inc. is the pioneer real-world augmented reality (AR) geolocation game. Using high-precision GPS tracking, Ingress transforms the physical world into an interactive global game map. Players join one of two opposing factions: The Enlightened (Green), who believe Exotic Matter (XM) can guide human evolution, or The Resistance (Blue), who fight to protect humanity from extraterrestrial influence.
To play, agents must physically walk to real-world points of cultural interest, such as public art installations, historical monuments, and libraries. These physical landmarks correspond to virtual "Portals" on your device. Agents interact with these portals to collect items, deploy resonators to claim them, and connect three portals together to form a "Control Field" to secure regional territory.
A major element of modern Ingress strategy is the autonomous third faction known as "Machina". Behaving like a computational virus, Machina infects neutral portals, generating red links that can cross player links and disrupt regional field planning. Machina spreads without the physical limits of human players, meaning it can capture portals in seasonal or off-limits locations.
To counter this, agents must coordinate physically, using strategies like building surrounding "quarantine fields" or throwing blocking links to isolate the spread. Destroying level 8 Machina portals is highly rewarding, dropping high-tier resonators, xmp bursters, and power cubes. Despite some balance challenges, Ingress remains a highly unique experience that seamlessly blends physical activity with deep strategic coordination. It is ad-free, supported by optional in-game purchases.
